It is such a thrill to see my mate Brian Cadd has been awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for his remarkable music career as well as his quiet achievements.

Brian is a humble man. You will never hear him big-noting himself. His focus is always about others. As a friend, he is kind, generous and very funny. As an entertainer he is one of the greatest songwriters Australia has ever generated.

Brian had two Australian successes with The Groop and Axiom before becoming a solo star.

The Groop had a Top 10 hit in 1967 with ‘Woman You’re Breaking Me’ and did it all over again in 1969 with ‘Such A Lovely Way’.

Axiom was Brian’s next band. Axiom featured Brian and Glenn Shorrock (pre-Little River Band). The songs are now part of Australian rock culture. ‘Arkansas Grass’ (1969), ‘A Little Ray Of Sunshine’ (1970) and ‘My Baby’s Gone’ (1971) are Oz Rock Classics.

The solo career started in 1972 with the self-titled ‘Brian Cadd’. It was an immediate success and Top 3 hit. It started a run of solo hits with another classic ‘Ginger Man’.

‘Parabrahm’ in 1973 reached no 5. ‘Moonshine’ in 1974 reached no 11 and gave us ‘Let Go’.

It didn’t stop there. Brian also had the party to be had by all band The Bootleg Family. There were more hits ‘Your Mama Don’t Dance’ (1973) and ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’.

The genius of Brian Cadd is in the songwriting. From Robin Jolley to John Farnham to the Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker and Pointer Sisters, Brian was recognised for his songwriting talent globally.

Brian Cadd and his wife Amanda Pelman are beautiful people. My late wife Ros would have been so happy to hear this news today, as she was a year ago when our friend Russell Morris was also awarded the honour.

Congrats Brian, you are a true Australian talent and a true friend.
