Was Paul McCartney’s ‘Blackbird’ written for one of his relatives?

One of the most well-known folk songs written by Paul McCartney for The Beatles, “Blackbird,” seems to be about a bird. Someone in Paul’s family, on the other hand, said it was about another family member. Here’s how her comments stack up against Paul’s.

According to a relative of Paul McCartney, an early version of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” had a different lyric.

Paul’s stepmother, Angie McCartney, said Paul wrote the song for her mother, Edie Stopforth, according to the book The Beatles: A Hard Day’s Write. “After a long illness, my mother was living with Jim and me,” she said. “During that time, Paul came to see us and sat on mum’s bed for a while. She told him that she was often awakened by the sound of a bird singing late at night. Paul finally went up to her room with a small tape recorder and captured the sound of the bird.”

Angie claimed to have a recording of The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” in which Paul sings, “This one’s for Edie.” Paul, on the other hand, does not seem to have mentioned Stopforth in relation to “Blackbird.”

Paul McCartney’s performance of this Beatles song was deemed “disconcerting” by one rock star.

Paul McCartney said that the Beatles’ song “Blackbird” was written to assist people.

Paul said the Little Rock Nine influenced “Blackbird,” according to Rolling Stone. The Little Rock Nine were a group of African-American students who enrolled in 1957 at Little Rock Central High School. The Arkansas National Guard was initially supposed to prevent the students from attending the high school but President Dwight D. Eisenhower intervened, making sure they helped to integrate the school. These events happened three years before the formation of The Beatles and 11 years before the release of the White Album, which includes “Blackbird.”
