MANILA, Philippines – “Ring out the old, ring in the new,” opens ex-Beatle George Harrison’s very optimistic New Year’s Eve sing-along, Ding Dong, Ding Dong. Lifted from English poet Lord Tennyson, it refers to George distancing himself from the Beatles and farewelling his marriage to first wife, Pattie Boyd.Among the inscriptions from Friar Park, the 33-acre estate in Oxford shire he purchased in January 1970, the faux clock chiming in the chorus lyrics lends to its New Year’s theme. Rather than the smash hit aimed for by George, it never achieved the status of a holiday classic.Although the Fab Four issued special Christmas recordings exclusive to fans club members but not an official Christmas song release, the former Beatles individually issued original Yuletide songs after disbanding in 1970.
